Foureth Anu by Flowerlark Foureth Anu by Flowerlark
If you are reading this, then congradulations! You have stumbled upon my most recent waste of time!!

This was one of those "Aw hell, let's just see if I can," pieces. I've done realistic animals, I've done coloured pencil, but I've never combined the two, & I just wanted to see what would happen. What's really bothering me is that this took perhapos a third of the time it takes me to do comicy art in coloured pencil. That's utterly unfair. Why did I have to become a comic artist?! Eh, anywho, I only do realistic stuffs when I'm stressed because it takes up time & concentration but creates little frustration & takes almost no effort or brain power & can be completed fairly quickly.

Sooooo since I've been stressed lately we have a floofy little griffon. He was modeled after a gyrfalcon & a geoffery's cat w/ a bit of lynx thrown in for good measure. I realize there are some (glaring) mistakes, but I'm actually quite proud of this piece even though I retain little intrest in photo-realism. As for the title, "Foureth Anu" (pronounced FOUR-ehth AH-noo) it's elvish for "Mountain Sentinal." Dorky, yes, but I don't care.

Prisma coloured pencils & black rapidograph on 11x11.5 smooth illustration bristol. Time: roughly 4-5 hours.

~Edit 8/27/05~

Wow, a DD, it's been a month & I still can't get over that! Heh heh. Anyhwho, "Foureth Anu" is now available as a print! I'm updating the image to match how it appears as a print. Really only the border has changed, & I didn't erase my original signature this time. And I'll give anyone who can pronounce my last name a free print! *lol* (not really >< ).

Foureth Anu by *Flowerlark is an excellent example of what one can do with prisma pencils, and how one can turn the unreal into so real that you could just reach out and touch its poofy tail. ( Suggested by PlaidRed and Featured by twosilverstars )

Holly crepe, that's the most textured pencil crayon picture I've ever seen.

It looks like a very professional illustration, and made me go wow.

I think the sky blue looks scratchy in comparison to everything else, and I think the eye could be more reflective- maybe by hardening the pupil and making the bottom of the iris brighter?

Yeahhh, I spell pretty bad. I realized I spelled griffon wrong right after I posted that pic. Although it can be spelled griffon, griffin, or gryphon. I think there's a fourth one, but I foget what it is ><

Actually, Gryphon is spelled MANY many ways, the main ones being griffin, griffon, and gryphon. Very nice pick, by the way ^v^

This sort of art doesn't usually grab me, but the fact that it's colored pencils did bring me in ^^ I think making this a print would be very useful to you, esp. after receiving the DD.

A better scan and some slight cleanup in photoshop would definitely help too, since I can see the edge of where the paper is a couple small smudges, but other than that, it looks ready to go! The face is what really strikes me, especially the eyes and teh detail in the beak. I think it could even work as a profile/portrait pic of just that area alone too, since that part is really strong, I think ^^

Marvelous colored pencil work, and anything with a gyrfalcon is automatically awesome. The whole creature fits together quite excellently, which is often difficult with gryphons.

I love using coloured pencils. You can get so many awesome affects, and too many people are stuck with this idea in their heads that pencils are for kids and to be an artist they should use something fancy. My favourite part of this picture is his eye - such pretty, pretty colours, and it looks like there are animal thoughts behind it. A lot of people draw these sorts of things and try too hard to give them human qualities (for instance, human thoughts and emotion) in their expression or character.

Yay! Colored pencils need more recognition. I did a gryphon like this, only it was osprey/snow leopard and it turned out ok [link] I like the throat.

Dude! I remember that griffon! I remember thinking "wow" when I saw it. I think it was not terribly long before I attempted my own griffon that I saw it. ^_^ Excellent work, I remember being blown away by your gallery & thinking the same thing, that coloured pencil didn't get enough recognition. It's truly an awesome medium, but many people insist that it's not a 'real' fine arts medium. Phooey to them! ;P
