Here it is, by request, the colouring tutorial for Shivae! This is done on photoshop 5 with a mouse- I'm not sure how it would work with a tablet, as I don't have one, but I think it'll be much the same. I keep seeing this particular image popping up in different places, so I'm going to re-colour it for the demonstration.

1. Syke sends me the image just like this (Image © Tiffany Ross) & I then work it at 450 pixels per inch.

2. I lay down the base colours with the fill tool. It's all on one layer.

3. I use a large airbrush set at pressure 19 to quickly paint in the red on Vas's back & the gold on his belly (using 'colour range' under the 'select' menu to marqee an area, fuzziness set at 0). I use a small airbrush for the wings, just using a scribbly motion to get the furry effect.

4. I then use the 'burn' & 'dodge' tools set at 'midtones' with a low exposure to acheive lights and darks making Vas more three dimensional.

5. For the stripes I set the airbrush pressure to 45 & use the 'fade' setting- depending on the image size, anywhere frm 10 to 30 steps. Airbrush is set back to normal & at pressure 19 again to paint in Vas's paws, muzzle, & eartips. These are then shaded with 'burn' & 'dodge.'

6. Background is done the same as the characters. For grass and foliage I use 'clouds' as a base, & then do scribbley patterns overtop. Bark is the same. Scribbleys.

And that's it! I use a much different method for paintings on photoshop, but this is the one I use for comics.

AWESOME!!
Thank you so much! :D
For some reason, the burn and dodge tool never seem to quite work to my liking! >< Hehehe..
You do a fantastic job with it though! I must try sometime!
Great tutorial!

Acctually, I never used them before Shivae, & I still don't for nice paintings, those are all airbrushed. But when you have an 8 panel comic page to fully shade in a week, it makes a great shortcut. ^_^

Thanks! Glad you do! :)

Great tutorial! I myself don't use the dodge/burn tool anymore since I can control the highlight and shadow colors better by just picking them out using the Hue-Saturation-Value-color-sliders in Photoshop. You usually only need to fiddle with the saturation and value.

Here is a combo of filters I regularly use in photoshop for making simple background textures for Akaelae. Usually I start this with a layer of solid color with the transparency locked (in PS 5 there should be a lock icon for the layer transparency lock I guess (or was it in PS 6) ).
1. Noise->Add Noise (adds a noise pattern)
2. Noise->Despeckle (makes the noise pattern thicker)
3. Select with the wand set with a big feather radius
4. Fiddle with Blur->Gaussian Blur or Motion Blur depending on what you want.
5. Repeat from 3 by reselecting a new area of the layer. (I usually vary depending on perspective and the picture's focus).
6. Make it rougher with the regular brush or airbrush (actually this I usually skip because of time constraints).

Sometimes the filters behind Sketch are useful too for some backgrounds after you applied blur on a texture.

Wow, dude, thanks so much for the watch! I'm truly flattered- I've admired your work for ages!

And thanks for the photoshop advice (I've been wondering how you got those particular effects) It's a little confusing to follow by just reading, but once I open up photoshop it'll make sense (I'm easily confused ;P ) ^_^ I have fiddled around w/ several methods of colouring, but ended up settling on something close to Syke's technique, as it's fairly fast & easy (I'm also notoriously lazy, heh). But I really like how you do Akaelae. :)

Very nice tutorial, Your able to capture such a great amount of detail and radiance in so few steps. I have to say thank you especially for the bit on the backgrounds, I've been longing to find some help with those! Must fave.
